A drink that’s healthy and hip sounds great,  RIGHT?  SWITCHEL also know as haymakers punch to some of us.

This is a gut healing, engery boosting, electrolyte replacer…hipster drink, hmmmm. Well, hipster not so much really.  The hipsters are just giving it a resurgence of sorts. It originated back with colonial farm workers needing to replace vital nutrients lost from working so hard and long in the heat. It is also referred to as haymakers punch. I’d say it’s more like the original energy drink. So toss out those high calorie, sugar laden, caffeine loaded red bulls and drink an all natural good for you energy drink. It will also appeal to those of you involved with the whole apple cider vinegar drink craze. I have to say I’m in that crowd. Apple cider vinegar seems to be the holy grail for gut healing. Drinking it daily as certainly helped me to elevated some of my belly troubles. 

Some folks in Brooklyn have helped out creating the hype for SWITCHEL and this modern day craze. Up Mountain, SWITCHEL , located in Brooklyn, is accomplishing a great job getting SWITCHEL out it masses.  They aren’t the only producer of SWITCHEL but they sure have created a buzz for it. Hence, the hipsters getting their hands on it. It really is down right delicious and refreshing. Thanks to companies like Up Mountain,  you can certainly buy a wonderful all natural product very readily these days. But, I really love making a batch. It’s quick, easy and I mean it really is so stupid simple. There are several varieties. I’m going to stick to the lowest FODMAP version I can find.

Classic SWITCHEL

Serves: 4

Ingredients:
4 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
4 tablespoons pure maple syrup
at least 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger; you can also add in extra slices
4 cups water or seltzer water

Directions:
Combine all the ingredients in a large jar with a lid.
Shake to combine.
At this point, you can drink it over ice cubes or refrigerate and let steep for 12 to 24 hours.
Stir well before serving.

The  ginger is a great anti inflammatory, the maple syrup is a low FODMAP sweetener. And well, Apple cider vinegar is the king of the gut. Its loaded with potassium, magnesium and calcium. And, it’s loaded with beneficial bacteria and acids. You can drink this everyday to get its health benefits. Add lemon or lime for a vitamin C boost too.  Also adding fresh mint makes it quite tasty  

It could also make a great low sugary mixer to a cocktail which will keep it FODMAPish.
